What is Graston Technique?

Graston technique requires a stainless steel instrument used by physiotherapists to perform soft tissue mobilization to release scar tissue, improve motion range, and reduce fascial restriction. With the help of the tool, a controlled microtrauma is developed around areas of soft tissue fibrosis or excessive scarring. This stimulates a local inflammatory response that enables the repair and healing of affected parts of the body.

Due to the up and down movement of the instrument over affected parts, it comes in contact with adhesions to break up scar tissues and restricted fascia. As the process continues, the range of motion gets restored, adhered fibers are reduced, and finally, pain is eradicated.  The major purpose of this form of therapy treatment is to re-modify affected soft tissues into normal functioning tissues.

Benefits of the Graston Technique

Graston instrument can be used with various techniques and pressure depending on the condition of the patient. Some of the benefits of the Graston technique include;

  • Breaks down restricted areas of soft tissues in the body
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Lowers sensitive areas
  • Allows proper movement of tissues
  • Improves muscles and joint function

Conditions that can be treated using the Graston technique

Some of the common conditions Graston technique have been very effective in treating with impressive outcome include;

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Acute and chronic sport injuries
  • TMJ pain
  • Groin pain
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Tendinosis
  • Hamstring pain
  • Neck /Lower back pain from strain, joint dysfunctions, or disc pathology
  • Quadricep pain

How can the Graston technique be used to treat your pain?

Your muscles comprise different fibers. When these fibers become tight, toxins are formed. The Graston Technique is used to identify areas of muscle adhesions and scar-like tissue in order to relieve pain around affected spots using a stainless steel instrument and a massage practice.

At Momentum Spine and Sports Physiotherapy Clinic, your physiotherapist will introduce some specific exercises to warm up before using a Graston instrument to massage and stretch affected parts to relax the muscle tissues as well as restore movement patterns and increase blood circulation in injured tissues.

Graston technique is safe, non-invasive, and 100% effective in treating chronic pain and inflammation. Patients who undergo this form of therapy are likely to experience little pain during the program and bruises after completing the program. We always urge our patients to notify their physiotherapist if the treatment process is causing discomfort. But we can assure you that our specialist will try as much as possible to make the process seamless and pain-free.
