“I was very happy with the treatment I received. I loved receiving the exercises by email. It was nice to have as a reminder to do them as well as how to do them. I was also happy with explanations provided for what was causing the pain.

What is cognitive rehabilitation?
Cognitive rehabilitation is a program focused on the rebuilding of cognitive skills that have been negatively affected due to neurological trauma like memory loss, difficulty in reasoning, and processing languages. This rehabilitation involves the use of external aids, performing of underlying cognitive skills, use of internal compensatory strategies, and education to create awareness of the problem, cause, and symptoms, as well as notify patients on the best way to prevent it.
The purpose of cognitive rehabilitation is to enhance the ability of a victim to be capable of performing their day-to-day activities. However, this can only be achievable through designed practices or training on different cognitive skills to rebuild normal functions.
What can cause a cognitive problem?
Concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can cause cognitive problems, leading to disorientation, language problems, memory difficulties, and more. Concussion/mild traumatic brain injury is a neurophysiological disorder that is caused due to a sudden mechanical force impact on the head, neck, or any part of your body, which is transmitted to the brain. This sudden impact can cause damage to living brain tissue and fatigue.
Conditions that can cause concussion/ mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) include;
- Work injury
- Automobile accident
- Falls
- Athletic injury
- Assault
What should I expect from cognitive rehabilitation at Momentum Spine and Sports Physiotherapy Clinic?
When you arrive for a cognitive rehabilitation appointment, your physiotherapist will perform a series of assessments in order to identify your current cognitive limitation. In some cases, it can be difficulty processing language, inability to solve problems, or any symptom that can be a threat to your brain.
After that, your therapist will create a cognitive recovery treatment plan that will focus on restoring cognitive function, recovering perceptual skills, and enhancing reasoning, remembering, and concentration skills. As well as building up the ability to read, write, listen, and understand information.
During the treatment session, you will be educated on specific activities to participate in to improve your focus. These activities will cut across simple to complex task as your recovery progress.
