McKenzie Method

The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and therapy © (MDT) is a process used to assess and treat pain around the body, spine, and extremists (leg or hands). For over 30years, many physiotherapists have adopted this method in relieving pain because of its remarkable and outstanding outcome.

McKenzie’s method was discovered and developed by renowned physiotherapy, Robin McKenzie. The purpose of this technique was to address the continuous demand from third-party payers and patients for professional rehabilitation care that improves self–care methods, which is less expensive and boosts recovery. One of the greatest achievements of using these methods is that the body modifies its own healing process without the use of surgery, drugs, or any passive modalities like ice, heat, or ultrasound therapy,

  • Numbness at extremists

  • Pain around back or neck that spends to shoulder or buttocks
  • Sciatica
  • Difficulty in bending due to lower back pain

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we have a trained McKenzie therapist at Momentum Spine and Sports Physiotherapy Clinic, Who will assess and diagnose your musculoskeletal system and how these pains can be eradicated as well as prevented from reoccurring when doing your regular activities.

Steps involved in McKenzie Method

Step 1- Assessment

Taking necessary details such as symptoms, health history, and other medical aspect is the first thing when a patient comes for McKenzie appointments. At this stage, you will be accessed when performing certain movements and positions. The difference between the McKenzie assessment and other regular therapeutic assess is the adoption of repeated movements. When performing these repeated movements, your change in movement is carefully observed and combined with your symptoms to identify the type of your problem.

Step 2- Classification

Specific mechanical procedures such as sustained posture and repeated movement used to address each syndrome differ. MDT is a broad classification system that consists of 3 major syndromes of classification. However, there are still a few conditions like the small group of patients that cannot be placed within any of these 3 major syndromes, but they are instead placed in the Other Subgroup, consisting of non-mechanical causes, serious pathogens, true chronic pain, and more….

Step 3 – Treatment

Information obtained after a complete assessment guides the specialist on what specific type of treatment is best for your condition. They will determine the postures and specific exercises that you should frequently do and those that should be avoided as much as possible till you have fully recovered. In cases where a patient is suffering from more difficult mechanical presentation, a MDT specialist will add hands-on methods till that patient is capable of self-management. The purpose of these procedures is to ensure each session has a more positive impact. Although findings have shown that frequent treatment sessions repeated five to six times a day have a higher effect within a short timeframe, unlike treatment sessions done once or twice a week. Treatment effect depends solely on a patient availability or involvement. The more active a patient is both at home and in the clinic, the faster the recovery process.

Step 4- Prevention

Having a repetitive problem can be very dangerous. That’s why your MDT specialist will educate you properly on how to self-treat your current problem and prevent it from reoccurring again. Through this stage, you will gain in-depth knowledge on how to handle certain symptoms if they happen. As a patient, we urge you to stick well with self-maintenance and safety practices because it will go a long way in preventing reoccurring problems.

Benefits of using the McKenzie Method

We are highly certain you may be wondering why this research- scientific-based method is important to you or the benefit of this aspect of physiotherapy. Generally, physiotherapy is recognized to be patient involving and educative. Likewise, McKenzie Method helps you to achieve your goals through it step by step procedure. The most important stage that determines the overall outcome is Step 1 (Assessment) because it gives your physiotherapist a better understanding of your condition after assessing and diagnosing. This also ensures that you and your therapist are on the same page at the start of the process.
